AFC Champions League

What's Happening In AFC Champions League So Far?

AFC Champions League

The 2020 Asian Football Champions League is the 39th edition of the tournament. Asian Football Federation organizes this competition. This is one of the most prominent football leagues around the world. The winners will secure getting automatically into the next year's Asian Football Champions League play-offs. On top of that, tournament winners will also get the opportunity to play in FIFA World Club, which is scheduled to be held in Qatar later the year.

What Has Happened So Far In The 2020 AFC Champions League?

Thirty-two different teams are taking part in the Asian Football Champions League, distributed between eight groups. However, the organizers are looking forward to increasing the number of teams in the tournament by up to 40. However, the Asian Football Champions League's progression has come to a temporary stop due to coronavirus fears. By the time this competition was suspended, most teams had only played 2 games. There had been 27 games with 54 goals scored for an average of 2.56 goals per match.

The most prominent teams so far were the Japanese Vissel Kobe and Yokohama Marinos. Each one achieved 2 victories and has a goal differential in their favor of 5. Another outstanding team is Al Taawon, from Saudi Arabia. They have also won their two matches without receiving goals. The last match played in this league was between Yokohama F. Marinos from Japan and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors from South Korea. In this match, all the spectators needed to wear facemasks. On the other hand, all the supporters were temperature-checked before getting into the stadium. Any person with a body temperature superior to 37.5 degrees couldn't get in. This was a precautionary measure the organizers taken to control the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus.

What Will Happen With The 2020 AFC Champions League Tournament?

The championship league was abandoned along with this match. That's because the organizers noticed that coronavirus is spreading so fast, and there is no ideal environment for them to continue with the matches. The four games that teams from China will have to face in Asian Football Champions League have been postponed to the last weeks of April. On the other hand, the league matches between FC Seoul and Beijing Guoan are postponed as well. The games scheduled to be played on the second and third days of the tournament have been postponed until May. However, the scheduled match between Chiangrai United from Thai and Beijing's team took place.

We are still not sure when we will be able to see the rescheduled games. The games have indeed been scheduled to resume from late April. However, we doubt whether the situation will improve by that time. If the coronavirus further spreads, we will surely see how AFC Champions League will have emergency meetings to decide what should be done. In the meantime, China's national team is continuously engaged with discussions along with AFC Champions League. They seem to be concerned about the qualification that they can secure for the World Cup qualification matches.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and wait until we hear some good news about Asian Football Champions League.
